12/30/09 Masters Swimmers Help Age-groupers Swim for Food

As swimmers, we think we know hunger. We stumble home after practice, open the refrigerator and indulge in any and everything we can get our hands on to satisfy the hunger created by a tough workout. However in many of our communities, there are people who are truly hungry. Anne Clewell of the Berkley Aquatics Club in New Jersey, helps youth swimmers in her local community understand this by educating them about community food banks and their efforts to help feed truly hungry people.

11/5/09 Stroke Clinic at Sussex County YMCA

Bob Hopkins will hold a stroke clinic this Sunday, November 8th in Conference Room #1 at the Sussex County YMCA from 2:00 until 3:00 for anyone interested in learning the proper mechanics of freestyle and backstroke (the long axis strokes).  Bob will show slow motion/stop motion video of two elite level swimmers and explain each movement that they make while swimming and why that movement is important.   After discussing the proper stroke technique components, he will describe some skill drills that you can do on your own to improve your stroke technique.  You are then invited to join the Sussex County YMCA Adult Swim Club in their workout from 3:30 till 4:45 where you can practice what you just learned.  There is no cost for the classroom session.  For the workout session, there is no cost if you are a Sussex County YMCA member or a member of a YMCA more than 50 miles from the Sussex County YMCA.  If not a Y member, you can purchase a Day Pass for $10 and join the swim workout.  Please let Bob know if you will attend either session so that we can plan accordingly.

1/15/09 Rutgers University is the proud host of the 2009 Swimming World Magazine College Conference Carnival. The event will take place on January 16th and 17th at the Werblin Recreation Center on Rutgers' Busch Campus. Participating schools include the University of Florida, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Richmond. This meet is of particular interest to the US Masters Swimming community since it will feature special masters swimmers attempting record breaking swims and there will also be a luncheon from 12 - 1:30pm, with guest speakers from each of the four university teams, Kristen Gary of USMS and the Trident foundation, Janel Jorgensen (silver medallist in 1988) as the head of the "Swim Across America Foundation" (and also a masters swimmer) and perhaps Craig Beardsley, a 1980 Olympian who works with Janel.
